In addition to his compositional pursuits, Stephan is also an avid film music scholar. His articles have appeared in the Colby Quarterly and the Journal of the Society for American Music and online at the Avid Listener music blog. He has a forthcoming chapter on the music for Ben-Hur in the new Companion to Ancient Greece and Rome On Screen. Currently he is writing a book on music and male subjectivity in postwar Hollywood films. He has also presented numerous papers at national and international conferences including the National Meetings of the American Musicological Society, The International Musicological Society, The Society for Ethnomusicology, the Lyrica Society and the Royal Musical Association in England.
